Discover your family history

The best way to discover your family history is to visit the places where your family used to live. From our research centre at Cefnmeurig, you can discover your Welsh roots, explore your ancestral land and preserve the past for the generations to come.

The spacious centre has:

  • A computer
  • Internet access
  • A library of books, magazines and CDs on family and local history
  • Maps
  • Microfiche reader
  • An A3 printer and scanner
  • A loo

It is separate and can’t be seen from the main house at Cefnmeurig. Therefore, you’re welcome to use it whichever of our holiday cottages you’re staying in.

You can choose to spend part of your holiday researching your family history. Or you can really bring the past to life and dedicate all your time to discovering how and where your family lived.

Stand in the spot where your ancestors stood

Cefnmeurig is right in the centre of the old Dyfed county so is ideally situated for your research if your ancestors lived in the area. Wherever you live now – many of our guests are from overseas – your stay here will give context to your research and help bring the past to life for you.

Find out where your ancestors used to live, which chapels they worshipped in and the places they used to visit. Then go and see them for yourself. Although you may not be able to go inside, imagine how it would feel to stand outside the house where your great-great-grandparents lived and raised their family. Your family.

Family History Course

We can help you discover your Welsh roots with our half-day family history course.

This short course gives you three hours help from a professional genealogist, whose in-depth knowledge will help you advance your research. You can meet at the centre at Cefnmeurig or at the county archives.

Family History

Family History for the Whole Family

We’d like family history to be a real family affair, involving all the generations. In particular we’d like to inspire children to develop an interest in their own history and where they’ve come from.

We’ve created an ancestor hunt so your whole family can get involved in bringing the past to life.

And for children under 10 we’ve developed a quest with clues for them to solve. Please give it a go and let us know how you got on. We’d like to develop more quests so would love your feedback.

Family and friends reunion breaks

Family and friends reunions are a great idea when you’re researching your family history. They’re an ideal time to share what you’ve discovered and enjoy talking about the past.

However they can be stressful to arrange. We can help. We have lots of experience putting together bespoke packages to create an event that is enjoyable for you all.

Cefnmeurig and Llysmeurig are perfect for family reunions. The two properties can sleep up to 13 people and the tables in the dining room and kitchen at Cefnmeurig can seat up to 17. For bigger groups we can arrange more accommodation nearby.

We can arrange catering for you, we can help you research your family history and we can prepare family trees for you and display them ready for your stay.
